THE MONSTRUMOLOGIST

Mon·strum·o·lo·gy, n.

1. The Study of life forms generally malevolent and not recognized by science as actual organisms, specifically those considered products of myth and folklore.

2. The act of hunting such creatures.

These are the secrets I have kept. This is the trust I never betrayed. But he is dead now and has been for nearly ninety years, the one who gave me his trust, the one for whom I kept these secrets. The one who saved me . . . and the one who cursed me.

So starts the diary of Will Henry, orphan and assistant to a doctor with a most unusual specialty: monster hunting. In the short time he has lived with the doctor, Will has grown accustomed to his late night callers and dangerous business. But when one visitor comes with the body of a young girl and the monster that was eating her, Will's world is about to change forever. The doctor has discovered a baby Anthropophagus—a headless monster that feeds through a mouth in its chest—and it signals a growing number of Anthropophagi. Now, Will and the doctor must face the horror threatening to overtake and consume our world before it is too late.

THE CURSE OF THE WENDIGO
While attempting to disprove that Homo vampiris, the vampire, could exist, Dr. Warthrop is asked by his former fiancé to rescue her husband from the Wendigo, a creature that starves even as it gorges itself on human flesh, which has snatched him in the Canadian wilderness. Although Warthrop also considers the Wendigo to be fictitious, he relents and rescues her husband from death and starvation, and then sees the man transform into a Wendigo. Can the doctor and Will Henry hunt down the ultimate predator, who, like the legendary vampire, is neither living nor dead, whose hunger for human flesh is never satisfied? This second book in The Monstrumologist series explores the line between myth and reality, love and hate, genius and madness.

Countdown to Karloff

This month we celebrate the birthday of the one and only Boris Karloff on Nov. 23rd - so I plan to celebrate the event with a series of posts about Karloff the Uncanny.

First up is an awesome closeup of Karloff in the monster makeup from Bride of Frankenstein, which many people consider to be his best role. I personally prefer the original to the sequel, but both are first rate in my mind. Be sure to click this for maximum detail...

recommended Movie of the Week - Jekyll and Hyde

This week's recommended movie is the 2002 Mark Redfield movie Jekyll and Hyde. it's a fantastic independent movie written, directed and starring Mark as the mad doctor himself. His performance as Mr. Hyde is easily as good as any ever put on film. Check it out - We aired this one on my program once, and I'm proud to say it was the television debut of this movie.

Help a special monster kid

This little boy named Aiden has Leukemia and is selling his drawings of monsters to help pay for his chemotherapy. Please help spread the word and buy a piece of art if so inclined - it's for a good cause and they're pretty darn cool, too!

Curse of the Werewolf

Curse of the Werewolf had a whole lot going for it, from fantastic production value to Terrance Fisher's always excellent direction, this is one of Hammer Studios' best. Oliver Reed plays the tortured lyncanthropic victim better even than Chaney, and the cast is superb all around. It even has one of my favorite Hammer character actors in it, Michael Ripper. All around just an awesome movie. Highly recommended - if you've never seen it, do yourself a favor and go track down a copy - you won't be disappointed.

Looking at these posters points out one thing that is missing from today's movies - an awesome art campaign. Back then studios really took pride in their advertising, and posters were more than photographs of floating heads - they were works of art! Take a look at these posters for this movie. Absolutely beautiful!
