Amazing Universal Monster Paintings

I stumbled across the work of Spanish artist Enrique Jiménez Corominas today and was blown away - these paintings are spectacular! Beautifully rendered with a real energetic style and vibrant colors, these are some of my favorite renditions of the Universal Monsters. Frankenstein 1931 Film Herald

Continuing the celebration of the Universal gems DRACULA and FRANKENSTEIN, today I share a beautiful film herald announcing the upcoming release of Frankenstein, 1931.

What is neat about this particular surviving herald is the fact the back is blank, demonstrating the way these heralds arrived. The theaters would add their own information onto the back of these heralds, such as the one below from 1932, which chose to use that space for advertising non-horror films coming up in March of 1932. Frankenstein premiered on November 21st, 1931, so it must have still been playing at this theater, the Central in Ephrata, PA, in February of 1932.

Universal had a bona fide hit on their hands, and in 1935 shooting began on the sequel, THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN.

Countdown to Karloff

This month we celebrate the birthday of the one and only Boris Karloff on Nov. 23rd - so I plan to celebrate the event with a series of posts about Karloff the Uncanny.

First up is an awesome closeup of Karloff in the monster makeup from Bride of Frankenstein, which many people consider to be his best role. I personally prefer the original to the sequel, but both are first rate in my mind. Be sure to click this for maximum detail...

Happy Birthday to Elsa Lanchester

Born 108 years ago today, the bride of Frankenstein herself, Elsa Lanchester.

Bride of Frankenstein 75th Anniversary

Universal Studios has inexplicably decided that the 75th anniversary of one of their greatest films, THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, shall go uncelebrated. This is a major shame. I know there are lots of fans of this film who would love to see a proper DVD release of this, remastered with lots of extras, commentaries and new specials.

Well my buddy Scott Essman, who just so happens to work at Universal, actually, is a fervent fan or monster movies, and in particular those classics of the Universal monster era. He took it upon himself to put together a really nice tribute to the Bride and a nice article. He sent it to me and I asked if i could pass it along here, because it is really well done. Enjoy!

Daily Comic Upload

Okay, call me wishy-washy, indecisive, or just plain crazy - but I changed my mind again and am moving the daily comic back to the main post section of the blog. I just like seeing the pages reproduced larger, and think it makes it easier to read than having to click the small link on the sidebar. All the pages will still be archived together in the comics tab.

Here are all the pages to-date to get you newer viewers caught up. Click to enlarge each:
