Moon

I was having a discussion with my director, Cameron McCasland, about what was our favorite movies of 2009. I mentioned I was going with Drag Me To Hell, and he agreed it's a great film. However, he said his choice was Moon. I decided to check it out to see for myself just what makes it worthy of movie of the year, so i rented it and watched it twice over the past few days.

I have to say, it is a really, really good movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is smart, unique, and moving, and best of all it does exactly what any good Science Fiction film  should - it makes you think. I found myself pondering the story for days afterwards. Even my wife really liked it, and she's not really a sci-fi kinda person. I totally see why Cameron would choose it and can't really argue it is a worthy selection.

Happy Birthday John Agar

Today is the birthday anniversary of one of my favorite actors, John Agar.

Born Jan 31, 1921, John Agar would go on to a terrific career as a leading man in Hollywood, and starred in many sci-fi and horror fan favorites including Attack of teh Puppet People, The Brain from Planet Arous, and Tarantula. Here's my recommended movie of the week from last May featuring John in The Brain from Planet Arous - and I also put together a music video for the Dead Elvi featuring their song, John Agar Rules. Universal Sci-fi ULTIMATE Collection Volumes 1 & 2

Got an update today from Scott Essman at Universal about an upcoming DVD release. In the seemingly never ending quest from Universal to repackage previously released material comes their latest release, The Classic Sci-fi Ultimate Collection. In fairness, though, it is a tremendous collection of films in one set. No word on extras, if any, and the retail price is kinda high, but for those folks who missed out on the first collection, which now is selling for as much as $150.00 used or more, (there is a new set listing for $375.00 on Amazon right now) this is their second chance to get these films at a reasonable rate. Here's what Scott had to say:

Universal has set The Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection: Volumes 1 & 2 for release on DVD on 5/13 (SRP $59.98). The set will feature 10 films on 6 discs, including Tarantula, The Mole People, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Monolith Monsters, Monster on the Campus, Dr. Cyclops, Cult of the Cobra, The Land Unknown, The Deadly Mantis and The Leech Woman. All will be in their original aspect ratios, and the widescreen films will be anamorphic.
