Dr. Gangrene's Recommended Movie of the Week turns 2
It was years ago today that I posted the very first Recommended Movie of the Week on Youtube. The Recommended Movie episodes were intended as a guide rather than a review. I wanted to use it as a space where I could say, "Here's a movie I like that I think you will too."
Looking back it doesn't seem possible two years have passed, but there it was on the date for the first RMOTW - 4-12-09. I didn't get as many of these posted as I'd have liked but it has been a fun side project when I'm not hip deep in production on more pressing projects.
Here is the full list of the RMOTW to date. There have been 33 episodes so far.
Maybe I can hit 50 before the year is over.
1. Trailer Park of Terror
2. Rock N Roll High School

Recommended Movie of the Week #31
This week we creep, and crawl, and glide and slide across the floor with our recommended movie of the week...
the 1958 classic, THE BLOB. Plus Doc Gangrene dispenses with a very valuable piece of information in this episode - you don't want to miss it - it could save your life!

Recommended Movie of the Week - Rated Z
This week's Recommended Movie is rated "Z" - for Zorro. It's the 1940 film, THE MARK OF ZORRO. Directed by Rouben Mamoulian and starring Tyrone Power, Linda Darnell, and the always impressive Basil Rathbone, this is one of my top ten favorite films of all time. I first saw this one on a matinee movie one Saturday afternoon at home, and it has always stuck with me. I bought it on dvd as soon as it was released. This movie has THE BEST sword fight scene ever filmed. Definitely a great movie, in my book, and my favorite Zorro movie.

Recommended Movie of the Week - Planet of the Apes
It's all monkey business this week with my recommended movie of the week - the 1968 Planet of the Apes. This is actually my favorite all time movie. I love this film. Definitely a true sci-fi classic.
I had such a crush on Nova (Linda Harrison) when I was younger - in fact, I think I still do! I saw her at Wonderfest a couple years back and she still looks terrific!

Recommended Movie of the Week - Tarantula
This week's recommend movie is one that is at the top of my favorite sci-fi movie list, and one I voted for each year in the Rondos as most deserving of a dvd release - I'm talking about the 1955 8-legged classic, Tarantula. Directed masterfully by Jack Arnold and starring my favorite actor, John Agar, this one is a true Universal classic.
I almost got to host this one last year, as my program director was offered a Universal package of horror films for me to host. Unfortunately, the funding wasn't in place to purchase the rights, so we had to pass. But Tarantula was in the list of films I'd have gotten to host... oh well, as Max Smart would say, "Missed it by that much!

Recommended Movie of the Week - Tales from the Crypt
Continuing the EC theme, this week I recommend the 1972 Amicus anthology film, Tales From the Crypt starring Peter Cushing. Each of these stories is taken from an EC comic, although not all are actually from Tales from the Crypt: two were originally Tales from the Crypt, one Vault of Horror, and two Haunt of Fear.

Recommended Movie of the Week - FROGS
This week's recommended movie is an oldie but a goodie - nature run amuk swingin 70s style with the cult classic, Frogs!

Recommended Movie of the Week - Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things
My recommended Movie of the week is the 1972 Bob Clark classic Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things. I actually hosted this one live once, in an old fashioned spook show in a little theater above a coffee house in Nashville. It was a fun time and a packed house - I put a clip from that show in this video!

Recommended Movie of the Week - Slither
I was out late last night traveling back from my son's basketball game. It was an hour and a half away, and since we got back late I was kinda tired and just didn't even get on the computer (their team lost but my son got a slam-dunk, so that was nice).
Anyway, just getting around to posting something here, and I thought I'd put another recommended movie of the week on here... now this series is one where I don't review a movie so much as just say hey, this is a film I like and think you should watch too. Sometimes it's a movie that is kinda rare, other times it isn't.
This week I recommend the movie Slither, by director James Gunn. Slither was made in 2006 and stars Nathan Fillion, Gregg Henry and Elizabeth Banks, who I seem to see quite a bit lately on Scrubs reruns. It's a modern horror movie with a classic 80s monster movie feel to it. Slithering worms from outer space, mutated disgusting infected humans, and shambling zombies - this is a very well made and a really fun movie!
So if you missed this one you should take the time to track it down and watch it. Highly recommended!

Happy Birthday John Agar
Today is the birthday anniversary of one of my favorite actors, John Agar.
Born Jan 31, 1921, John Agar would go on to a terrific career as a leading man in Hollywood, and starred in many sci-fi and horror fan favorites including Attack of teh Puppet People, The Brain from Planet Arous, and Tarantula. Here's my recommended movie of the week from last May featuring John in The Brain from Planet Arous - and I also put together a music video for the Dead Elvi featuring their song, John Agar Rules. Check it out below!!

Monster Kid Home Movies

I realized I have several youtube videos that I never posted on the blog here - so I'll remedy that over the next week or so. Below is my Recommended Movie of the Week #10 - it is for the Monster Kid Home Movie dvd. This is an awesome collection of home movies made by kids in the 50-70s, shot mostly on 8mm film - and it is one of my favorite dvds. It's a loving tribute to the monster movies we all grew up with, and is one of my favorite dvds.
